can someone help me with thhis problem? write in factored form, an expression for the shaded portion of the figure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a rectangle with a square on each side labeled x times x on the bottom its 18 and the side is 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which part is shaded?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1315252395954:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the squares are white the rest is shaded green

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you find whats not shaded?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

area of shaded part = total area - 4 * area of each square

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in factored form: 4 (36-13x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that factored ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes the greatest common factor of 52 and 144 is 4 so thats as far as we can go factoring

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the teacher says its incorrect?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok - i'm having a bad day today - lets have another look

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry to hear that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the grandkids keeping interrupting me - yes - its the wrong answer! sorry area of shaded part = total area - 4 * area of each square total area = 18*8 = 144 area of squares = 4x^2 area of shaded part = 144 - 4x^2 this is difference of two squares which factored is: (12 - 2x)(12+2x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe i should take a break!! lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thanks for your help :)
