\[a = \frac{m}{n}\] \[b = \frac{p}{q}\] \[\rightarrow a+b = \frac{m}{n}+\frac{p}{q} = \frac{mq+pn}{nq} = \frac{j}{k}\] where m,n,p,q,j,k are all integers therefore a+b is rational
