What was so innovative about Jack Kerouac?

Kerouac, in my opinion, had a style that was uncensored in it's handling of content that was incredibly sensitive to the time-frame. Coming out of WWII, Kerouac handled topics like drugs, homosexuality, sub-culture...stuff that was quite taboo in the 50's and early 60's. He paved the way for much of what we take for granted in present-day literature.
