Evaluate the expression below when g = -6. Problem:-3g - 2 -(-4g + 10) Choices: A. -18 B. 2 C. 30 D. 54
what is -6 * -4 ?
im not sure / :
what does your gut think it is?
-6 times -4
24
A. -18
24 is absolutely correct :), and what is 24 + 10?
34 : )
34 is great as well :) now what would you say -(10) would be?
i should read that better; what is -(34) is what i meant to say ...
uuum. . . , wait. im only an eighth grader im tenth grade classes. this stuff is confusing
its confusing for a little bit; but this is all very basic and doable, even for an eighth grader ... here is what you have accomplished so far: -3g - 2 -(-4g + 10) ; replace g by -6 -3g - 2 -(-4(-6) + 10) -3g - 2 -(24 + 10) -3g - 2 -(34) now lets see what -(34) would be; can we simply call this -34?
yes ?
you are correct again ... -(34) = -34 -3g -2 -34 ; so what would you say: -2-34 = ?
-58 ?
wait
-34 -2 when both are negative, just add and the answer is negative ----
-36 !
-36 is the better answer for that yes :) so we have figured it all the way to this: -3g - 36 ; lets replace the "g" by -6 again, since g = -6 in this case: what is -3(-6)? which is another way to write -3 times -6
18
the answer is -18 when I followed the experssion
your a pro at this :) now; 18 - 36 will give us the final answer :) what would you get?
gave me -18
yay!! ... you did it :) -18 is correct
As I found ahead it's -18 and no need to complictae easy things
!! Thank's Alot : ))
youre welcome :D
you are welcome
There are several concepts that need to be mastered to solve this question: * substitution of a variable with a value * order of operations * dealing with addition, subtraction, multiplication of positive and negative numbers So, when doing these problems in the beginning they need to be solved focusing on each and every step making sure they are done in the right sequence. Later, it just becomes second nature, and you do mentally it automatically - in fact, in some cases I tend to rush too fast through these and mess them up :)
