Fun Fact #23: Moving to soil Bacteria again, what do you think they do when the soil dries out? You know a lot of soil bacteria are actually still alive in dry soil. One way that they survive is by clumping together and exuding slime. This slime termed extracellular polymeric substance is produced by the cells and forms a thick slime shield to protect the cells from drying out. (Eww!)
