you move the decimal place over until it is a single digit on the left of the decimal.  Count the number of places you moved it over and then that number will be the exponent of 10 in your answer.

Hi Sharebear,

A couple notes. Scientific notation will always move the decimal place until you have a single digit left (as both Jen and Super posted). However, engineering notation will move the decimal point in groups of 3 only.

So, in engineering notation, (not what you are looking for) the answer would be 108 x 10^6
