How do you find the remainder of: (x^5-4x^4+x^3-7x+2)/(x+3)
to state the obvious; by dividing it out
division is division regardless ..... x^4 -7x^3 +22x^2 -66x +191 ------------------------ x+3 | x^5 -4x^4 +x^3 -7x +2 -(x^5 +3x^4) ------------ -7x^4 +x^3 -(-7x^4 -21x^3) ------------------ 22x^3 -7x -(22x^3+66x^2) --------------- -66x^2 -7x +2 -(-66x^2 -198x) ----------------- 191x + 2 -(191x +573) -------------- -571 <-- remainder
if i kept track of it that is
put whats left back over the (x+3)
one trick to keep things straight would be simply to negate (x+3) to begin with: -x-3 and that way you aint gotta worry about the subtraction per se
