Zaroff is the man on the island who is the hunter he has made up a game involving hunting. He lets his "game" get a 3 hour head start and the rule is if the person can survive 3 days without being killed then they win the game if not Zaroff kills them (usually because he hunted them down). When a hunter washes ashore to his island Zaroff challenges him to play his game.
