In a slightly detailed explanation, could someone please explain to me what on earth a lipid is? :)

lipids are one of the 4 major biomolecules in living organisms (others are carbohydrates, protein and nucleic acid). lipids are basically organic molecules that aren't soluble in water and this group can be divided into two main groups, the ones that have ester linkages (waxes and fats) and the ones that don't have ester linkages (steroids etc.)
