1. The purpose of school is to learn things for your future benefit. 2. We do these things because by doing them we are helping ourselves learn and remember things we may need to know in the future.
This is in history so i'm assuming your question has to do with history. If so, then let me dredge out what i can from my high school history class. Ah, school's original purpose (in America) was to educate the common man so he is smart enough to vote for the good politician. Maybe i should clarify that this applies to the first free public schools. Yes, they were built by politics for politics. The first colleges were built to teach priest-hood (Harvard, Yale, etc). As to why we should do these things in school, well why not! I personally would not want to be grouped in with the uneducated folks. Biologically speaking, it is our duty as human beings to pass our genes down and increase our species' chances of survival. WE DO THAT BY GAINING AND PASSING ON OUR KNOWLEDGE. There's your answer.
The purpose of school, is to learn how to learn. The people teaching the class are there to make sure the answer you come up with, matches the one you should come up with. The purpose of drills, test, and worksheets is to show your proficiency in getting the proper answer. Once a person learns to read, and comprehend, there should be nothing they cannot teach themselves.
