A helicopter leaves Central Airport and flies north at 180 mi/h. Twenty minutes later a plane leaves the airport and follows the helicopter at 330 mi/h. How long does it take the plane to overtake the helicopter?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

About 11 minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in 20 mins, which is 1/3 of an hour, the helicopter would have flown 180mi/h x 1/3h = 60 mi. so, now the plane has to catch up 60 mi with the helicopter. Since the plane travels at 330mi/h, it will take 60 mi / 330mi/h = _______ h to ovetake the helicopter. please fill in the blank cuz i don't have a calculator with me rite now...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do i get the blank?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do 60/330

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which i m guessing is 2/11 h... i think this is how the question is done... sorry if my solution is wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Jay is right in his equation, but 60/330 is .18, so you take 18% of an hour, which is 10.9 minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha:) i m a girl but it really doesn't matter... 60/330 is .18 repeating ( 0.18181818...) so I think it would be best if it were 2/11 hour since it is not exactly 0.18
