Ix-4I=3 The absolute value equation above means that x-4 is equal to 3, OR, that x-4 is equal to -3. If x-4=3, then x=7. If x-4=-3, then x=1. Now imagine the number line with the numbers 1 and 7 marked with a dot. The number 4 is in the center of that segment. And the numbers 1 and 7 are at a distance of exactly 3 units of the number 4 which is at the center. That is exactly what the absolute value equation is asking you to find out. Which numbers are within a distance of 3 units of 4. And your answer is x=1 and x=7.
