The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the first overt engagement of the American Civil War. The Fort, a Federal arsenal in Charleston Harbor, was a symbol of Federal(National or Union) power in the South. The bombardment led by General Beauregard commenced six days after South Carolina declared their secession(breaking away).
