2x-9+10+3x-9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Combine like terms and get 5x-8. The set equal to zero. Then add 8 to both sides. 5x-8=0 +8 +8 5x=8 Divide both sides by 5 5x = 8 /5 /5 x=8/5

where yu get 8 from

When you combine the like terms. you add the 2x and 3x together, 5x. Then you combine the -9+10-9, which equals -8. so 5x-8, then set it all to zero to solve for x.

Did you figure it out?

If you are not solving for x and just need to simplify the expression, you just need to combine like terms. 2x-9+10+3x-9 I try to group the terms together but respect the signs that are in front of them, it makes it a little easier to read. 2x+3x=5x -9+10=1 1-9=-8 So you now have a +5x and a -8. Mash them back together into an expression respecting the signs that precede the number. 5x-8 If you were to solve for x, you need to make the expression equal to 0. 5x-8=0 You can't solve for x like this so you need to move the 8 to the other side. 5x-8+8=0+8 The 8s on the left cancel and you are adding 8 to the right side. 5x=8 Now you have to divide to get x 'alone'. 5x/5=8/5 The 5s will cancel leaving x 'alone'. x=8/5 Now, to check your work, plug into the place the fraction 8/5. 5*8/5-8=0 Combine the like terms and they should equal 0. So the expression will be true. If they do not equal zero, something in your math is wrong.
