Okay heres a word problem. its algebra 1 9th grade standard. "You have $16 and a coupon for a $5 discount at a local supermarket. A bottle of olive oil costs $7. How many bottles of olive oil can you buy" ?

OpenStudy (stormfire1):

In essence, you have $21...which will buy you 3 bottles. The expression would be \[16+5=7x\] You simply divide both sides by 7 to solve for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that I have to divide the 7 by the 7x but which one of the other numbers do I also divide 7 by? 16 or 5 ?

OpenStudy (stormfire1):

since 16+5 can just be added, add them up first...and then divide the result by 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay! THANK YOU! (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So x ='s 3 ?

OpenStudy (stormfire1):
