the roots are when you substitute the value to the x it will satisfy the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2-x-1=0 x^2-x=1 x^2-x+1/4=1+1/4 (x-1/2)^2=5/4 x-1/2=sqrt(5)/sqrt(4) x=[sqrt(5)/sqrt(4)]-1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x^2+x-4=0\]\[Δ=b^2-4ac=1^2-4(-4)=17\]\[x_{1,2}=\frac{-b \pm \sqrt{Δ}}{2a}=\frac{-1\pm \sqrt{17}}{2\times1}\]\[x_{1,2}=\frac{-1\pm \sqrt{17}}{2}\]
