Find the Product (x+3)(y+6)
FOIL
Is this equation right?
Yes
Ok, the car accelerates at a constant rate for 15 seconds, goes at constant velocity (zero acceleration) for 25 seconds and then slows (at constant acceleration) for 10 seconds, coming to a complete stop. The car has a positive velocity this entire time and so its displacement will be the same as the distance travelled. This is 2km=2000m according to your screen shot. So we have 2000m/50s=40m/s for the average velocity.
All we need to calculate average velocity is divide the change in position by the change in time. We both agree that the time interval is 50 seconds. What is the change in position? Well, the car travels 2km in the same direction. So it's change in position is 2km.
Keep in mind that the y-axis is the velocity of the car, NOT it's position. If the velocity is positive the car is moving in one direction, if it is zero the car is not moving at all. If the velocity is negative the car has now turned around and is going back the way it came. The velocity is never negative in this example so the car never turns around.
So the total distance the car has travelled occurs in one direction. It starts from rest and goes East, let's say, speeding up to a constant speed, and then slows down to a stop. The car has travelled 2km East, so its displacement is 2km.
