Find the exact value of the following. arctan(−sqrt3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can start you out: Let theta=arctan(-sqrt3) tan(theta)=-sqrt(3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When I worked it out I got (2pi)/3, and (5pi)/3 but it's not the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay : the answer is -pi/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can reason on that answer, ask your self, if i look at the unit circle would 2pi/3 give me -sqrt(3)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know where I went wrong. When I was looking at the unit circle I was figuring out what theta value would create -sqrt3 for cot.
