http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearson_product-moment_correlation_coefficient It tells you how correlated two variables are. It indicates how strongly dependent one variable is on the value of the other. Positive correlation means they are directly related, negative correlation means they are inversely related, and zero correlation means they are not related.

+1 is perfect positive correlation, -1 is perfect negative correlation.
