It essentially restricted the British colonies in the new world from directly trading with foreign powers other than England.

Sure, it was a trade restriction. You couldn't import any goods that weren't British. So if Spain had something you wanted, you had to go through a middle-man instead of getting it directly from a Spanish merchant. In the age of tall ships, this meant exponential price increases. So the colonists became increasingly fed up with the whole process. The Boston Tea Party was a response to this policy in many ways.
