Why median is a better measure of center than mean?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If you have extremes, then the mean will be skewed. The median however will remain unchanged

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mean is just the average of the data and if there is an outlier, that could throw the whole set of numbers off. the median will always be the same.

thanks :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ex: say you have 1, 2, 3 The mean is 2 and the median is 2 But.. If you have 1, 2, 99 then the mean will be skewed to a larger value but the median will stay 2

yep, no problem man, were here to help
