OpenStudy (anonymous):

FileMaker is a fairly common one, check out the site http://www.filemaker.com/

Mysql is popular. You can download wamp cause its a nice package that has apache mysql and php. Easy to install and use

If you have a linux computer you can install lamp

If you have a mac computer you can install xampp

If you are on a windows operating system I would go here http://www.microsoft.com/express Get the visual studio express tools, which allows you to develop Visual Basic, C#, C++ applications Once you have those tools, at the same link get the SQLServer express and install. All express items are FREE and from Microsoft If you are a student, you can get more cool tools from dreamspark.com, which is by Microsoft too. On Linux fedora, open a terminal and type yum install mysql On Ubuntu, type apt-get install mysql

I'd recommend going with MySQL or xampp (which uses MySQL). It really depends on what you're wanting to do with it. A relational database might not even be best suited for your needs.

Oracle 10g is recommended. It is a relational database and easy to use.
