(x-1)^5/2=243

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it (x-1)^(5/2) or ((x-1)^5) / 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah I try to do the work on paper and I got 8 but i don't think that right

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

\[\Large (x-1)^{\frac{5}{2}}=243\] \[\Large (x-1)^{5}=243^2\] \[\Large x-1=(243^2)^{\frac{1}{5}}\] \[\Large x-1=243^{\frac{2}{5}}\] \[\Large x-1=(243^{\frac{1}{5}})^{2}\] \[\Large x-1=(\sqrt[5]{243})^{2}\] \[\Large x-1=(\sqrt[5]{3^5})^{2}\] \[\Large x-1=3^{2}\] \[\Large x-1=9\] \[\Large x=9+1\] \[\Large x=10\]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

@omarhaps maybe you made a mistake on the last line of what I have (ie you subtracted 1 instead of adding 1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey thanks for the help & I think your right. I made a little mistake
