The difference between having Information and having Knowledge. At any given point in your day you can use your smart phone to ask Google a question and get what is likely to be a correct answer (unless you're asking for an opinion rather than a fact). But you would need to be hooked into google for everything for it to replace your actual knowledge-base.

History is more than just dates and names, it's events, outcomes, mistakes and successes. It's a map of what has worked in the past and what hasn't. Having Knowledge of history (rather than simple access to Information about history) allows us to address the present with the confidence derived from our ancestors' lives. For instance, every science is based on History. Newton is a historical figure, his laws are historical and functional and if we had no Knowledge of them, our engineers couldn't build a space-ship to get us to the moon. Even if they had Google, they wouldn't know how to apply the information and what it's relevance is.
