monomials are variables that are of power 1. For example in the term 5x, x is a monomial. x squared is not a monomial because x is being raised to the second power. So it's very simple. You are dealing with terms with an x in it. 3x + 2x = 5x. you just add the coefficients of monomials i.e. 3+2 = 5 and put it in front of the x. 5x - 2x = 3x. you subtract the coefficients. 3x * 2x = 6 x^2. (x^2 means x-squared). 3x2 is 6 and x*x is x^2. That's how you get 6x^2. 10x / 2x = 5. you realize that 10/2=5. think about this: x/x=1, just like 5/5=1. anything divided by itself =1. So in this example the x terms cancel themselves out, leaving you only dealing with 10/2.
