From the transcript of lecture 1: "There is no required text. If you feel exposed without a text book, you really have to have a textbook, you'll find one recommended-- actually I'm going to reuse that word, John, at least suggested it, on the course website. I don't think either of us are thrilled with the text, it's the best we've probably found for Python, it's OK. If you need it, it's there. But we're going to basically not rely on any specific text." There are a bunch of links to various readings associated with the class here: http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-00-introduction-to-computer-science-and-programming-fall-2008/readings/ I think he's referring to the Python Tutorial, How to Think Like A Computer Scientist, and Python Programming. All three of those have links on the page above.

i think the recommended textbook for the course is "Python Programming: An Introduction to Computer Science", as noted at the very bottom of the syllabus here http://bit.ly/9e0UGt (it is rather expensive...) anyway i think that all you'll need to read can be found in the resources Julie pointed you at. this seem to be the opinion of the instructor of the course, as well :)

Zelle, John. Python Programming: An Introduction to Computer Science. Wilsonville, OR: Franklin, Beedle & Associates, 2003. ISBN: 9781887902991. Copied and pasted from the syllabus. $36.00 on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Python-Programming-Introduction-Computer-Science/dp/1887902996 You can probably find a cheap one on e-bay as well. Since we are all doing the OCW version, it might be best to use the internet and/or pace yourself. If you are willing to spend the money, go for it!
