The final cost of an item was $50. This included 6% sales tax. What was the price of the item before tax?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

47

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh no!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x + 0.06x = 50 1.06x=50 x= 47.17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to increase a number by 6% multiply it by 1.06

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you know \[1.06P=50\] and therefore \[P=50\div1.06\]

OpenStudy (nikita2):

50 = X + 0.06*X

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you cannot take 6% of 50 and subtract because 6% of 50 is more than 6% of the original price

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can of course also start with \[50=P+.06P\] but then by the distributive law you know that this is the same as \[50=(1.06)P\] so easiest to start with \[1.06P=50\]
