Fun Fact #32: This is probably one of the more strange fun facts. Did you know that chickens can change thier sex? This process known as "spontaneous sex reversal" usually occurs because chickens only have one fully functional ovary. If this ovary is damaged in some way (ie. disease or tumors etc) the right one will begin to form. However this new ovary may contain traces of nuts (excuse the language), that is, it can contain characterisitics of the ovary, the testes, or both. This results in a chicken suddenly having male characteristics that is not laying eggs, crowing etc.
In other words, one day you have a laying hen then for some reason, after awhile, you have a rooster that looks like a rooster, crows like a rooster but is genetically a hen.
where do u get this fact from??
I got the idea originally from a book about the history of discorvery of birds but I don't remeber the title, the main part of this I got from: www.ca.uky.edu/smallflocks/.../Sex_reversal_in_chickens.pdf
