The easiest way is to get the installation disk and choose a fresh install. If I recall correctly and you try the method above from within the operating system you will get an error that files are in use. When booting from an XP or other disk there is also an option to format the disk. Another option would be to prepare abootable flash drive and do the same. There are both Unix and Dos based bootable images that can be located and used to wipe a drive.
