Case 10 C: The Rat-A-Tat Tool Company The The Rat-A-Tat Tool Company manufactures on a job-lot basis 300 models of portable air tools requiring some 5000 different parts. Production control in the plant is essentially a visual system which operates as follows: In the center of the manufacturing area is a factory control room. There as each order is received from the scheduling office, the control-room clerk notes the desired delivery and schedules the required parts by department and operation. Around the room are control boards, each tool having its own board area. For each part number there is a separate factory order which lists operations in proper sequence and which is coded by color to indicate the departments involved. Periodically during the shift each foreman walks to the control room, looks over the boards, and checks orders bearing the color of his department, noting their priority and progress.A clip placed on his departmental color indicates that the parts are ready for his department. A clip on a particular operation number indicates where work is being performed, and the clip is moved from operation to operation as the order progresses. Color flags show urgency: red flag calling for 60-day delivery; yellow flag 30-day and white flag rush . A form of job card known as a "traveler" accompanies the parts and contains a necessary technical information on work to be performed. the traveler also has spaces for possing production of good and rejected pieces at each operation. Twice during each shift the foreman reports to the control room the progress of each order being processed in his department. Questions: Comment on the various features of the foregoing dispatching and follow-up system, noting any advantages and shortcomings you detect.

The company is selling portable air tools, but you don't need to know that in order to answer the question. They only want you to comment on the follow-up system, and advantages or shortcomings you see with it. The type of product is unimportant.
