Probably because the thumb is the least used one of them all and doesn't have any sort scratches

They could also use the tongue or the feet. The hand is most convenient appendage, and the thumb is the easiest to isolate. That, and the nature of opposable thumbs means that the thumb print is the most likely to be present at the scene.
