In diving to a depth of 645 m, an elephant seal also moves 590 m due east of his starting point. What is the magnitude of the seal's displacement?

Draw a diagram and you'll see the seal has moved 645m vertically (let's say from A to B) and 590m horizontally (from B to C). The displacement of the seal is AC. Notice now that ABC is a right angled triangle of which AC is the hypotenuse. Now AC^2 = AB^2 + BC^2 so AC = ....
