How do you solve this equation by completing the square? x^2+10x-1=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sou need that to look like x²+2ax+a², since you already have x² and 2ax is 10 x , a should be 5, adding 26 to both sides gives the x²+2*5*x+5² that can be factorized to (5+5)²=26

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+5)²=26, mistyped that one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so x=-5 -+sqrt(26)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why 26?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because you want to have x²+10x+25, but you have x²+10x -1, adding 26 gives what you need

I see.
