I would recommend adding more subcategories, in return, this would enable the user to search more specifically. Right now, I am spending my time scrolling through the history of questions for each category. I would also give users an opportunity to start private discussion groups within specific categories, so un-welcomed community members can be excluded for a certain period of time.
You can also give individual recognition for weekly performances on this site's homepage. This will help make the site appear more social and focused on the people within the site. This site's reward system is being used to spark inner community activity to inform who me whose doing what. Can I build my own network of friends?
I would recommend putting the about video on the homepage to make it more intriguing upfront because you want to make a good first impression to communicate this is experience is more that just a question forum.
I would take the "owl" identity and give it a name. This owl could in return serve as a pet. People that contribute to the initiative of the site the most, remain the owner of the pet owl. It would serve as motivation to answer questions in addition to the current reward system you have setup.
Owlfred already has a name ;) And we've considered a variety of these ideas here and there. Sometimes we've decided to set them aside, sometimes we've decided that we want to wait, and some of them we're working on as we speak. Keep an eye out! :)
