Add 4x + 1 to both sides: 3x^2 + 4x + 1 Split the middle term: 3x^2 + 1x + 3x + 1 Factor x out of the first two terms, and 1 out of the last two terms: x(3x+ 1) + 1(3x + 1) Factor out 3x + 1: (3x + 1)(x+ 1)
