for the graph of x^2 shift 8 units to the left and reflect in the x-axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe the answer is \[-(x+8)^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why is it not -x^2 -8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-(x+8)squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because if the 8 is outside of the parenthesis then that is a vertical. You have to have the 8 inside the parenthesis in order to shift it left or right. If you want to shift it 8 units left then you must add 8 inside the parenthesis (Its backwards.. you would think if you wanted to move left it would be - 8 but its not) So the answer is \[-(x+8)^2\]

Vertical shift*

okay i get that i have to add 8 to shift to the left and add a minus infront of the function to reflect in the x-axis. -(x^2 +8) why cant the answer be this?
