what is the conjugate of a+b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a-b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the conjugate of \[3+5\] \[3-5\]?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, do you know what the conjugate is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i think so 3+5 = 8 and the conjugate of 8 is 8 3-5=-2 and it is also its own conjugate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the conjugate of \[a+bi\] is \[a-bi\] for complex numbers and the conjugate of \[a+\sqrt{b}\] is \[a-\sqrt{b}\] if you are talking about real numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what is the conjugate of a+b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i have never heard of the conjugate of \[a+b\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 + 5 = 8 2 + 6 = 8 is the conjugate of 3 + 5 3 - 5? this makes the conjugate of 8 as -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because : http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/conjugate.html

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what nonsense. the "conjugate" of 2 + 3 is certainly not 2 - 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this makes the conjugate or 5 into -1 and also of course since 4+ 1 = 5 apparently 5 has multiply conjugates.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, go write a letter to someone

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you think the answer to this question should be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it doesn't have an answer if a and b are unspecified.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in the complex number system the conjugate of a real number is itself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand what you mean, but this guy's teacher is is probably expecting a-b as the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how in god's green earth can the conjugate of 3 + 2 be 3 - 2? makes no sense whatseover

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that i believe! there is no end to bad math instruction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

every number would have an infinite amount of conjugates right? -1+6 has conjugate -1-6 and also 2+3 has conjugate 2-3 etc. so 5 has an infinite number of conjugates by this wingspaneyed definition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i fourtunatly made it out of one of the worst public school systems in the county, and i know that his teacher is not expecting him to come back to school and say that he wont answer the question because the a and b are unspecified. The teacher probably does not even know what that means

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i had the distinct pleasure of teaching high school math teachers to prepare for exams, and also to get degrees. very nice people for the most part, but man oh man their idea of math and their background in it would make you cringe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what can i say, most teachers graduate with degrees in education not mathematics

OpenStudy (anonymous):

at least that has been my experience in Chicago

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so sadly true. that is why people learn to multiply two 2-digit numbers together by sticking them inside a box

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you indirectly talking about me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jk
