Why do we use scientific notation, and what are the parts of an expression written in scientific notation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

scientific notation is used for displaying very large numbers with fewer digits it is used to correctly write the accuracy of your work.. say if you started with 3 sig figs and get a number such as 3434000.... you can only use the 3 sig figs to maintain the correct accuracy 3.43x10^6

that is to make it easy in writing the those numbers with many many digits, especially in the field of scientific areas where huge of these numbers are met. for example the speed of light is 3*10^28 m/s , and a rule it's writen as one integer then come the decimals *10 ^n, where n is + or - power
