"five times a number" ---> 5x "five times a number increased by 4" ---> 5x+4 "five times a number increased by 4 is 40" ---> 5x+4 = 40 --------------------------------------------------- now solve 5x+4 = 40 5x = 40-4 5x = 36 x = 36/5
