This is not the answer to the question, but it helps if with exercises 2A-1 to 2A-4: 

Formula (2) there means the formula for the linear approximation of $$(1+x)^r \approx 1 + rx$$,

I am not positive, but I did not find this referring to things in his notes, so I believe it is referring to items in the recommended text.
