amy paid $60.82 for a pair of running shoes during a 30% off sale. what is the regular price?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to do this problem, make sure to understand that if she got 30% off she paid 70% of the regular price.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did u get 70%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that means that 70% of the regular price is $60.82

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 70% because 100% - 30% = 70%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh duh sorry ,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's ok because it is an important part of the problem. you cannot do it without it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you know that 70% of the regular price is $60.82 translate this in to math and write \[.7P= 60.82\] and solve by saying \[P=60.82\div.7\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please notice that you CANNOT do this problem by finding 30% of $60.82 and adding it back. that is because 30% of the reduced price is less that 30% of the regular price. that is why the first step is very important, saying "30% off means paying 70% of the price"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u lost me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which step is not clear? the basic idea is that you have to divide 60.82 by 0.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and you use .7 because it is 70%, and also because if you get 30% off you pay 70% of the price

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did that i came out with the answer of 86.89 am i right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

awesome i got it right, thank you so much!!!
