that is the x, since 1 is understood to be infront of it you do not need to write it.  If it was any other number then you would. E.g.$2 per student then "25+2x"

In order to set up this equation you need to figure out what you x is.  And that is how many weeks.  So we know he has at least 3 plus the five days a week.  So your equation should be: 3x+5
We put the x with the hats because we are not sure how many he has.

haha i know. lol.  The reason I am confused is because we only know he has atleast 3 hats but we do not know how many of each color he has.  That is what is causing my confusion. Maybe their is a mistake from when you copied it?

Nope.  That is what the question asks.  It says Identify any missing or extra information.  Then solve if possible in the directions.
