What is the graph of the system y = –2x + 3 and 2x + 4y = –8? ( will be posting the graph choices in the comments in a minute)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

10/3, -11/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If we are to find the slope of both lines, we have: 2x+y=-3 y=-3-2x -> y=-2x-3 (Plug in values) 2x+4y=-8 4y = -2x-8 y = -1/2x - 2 (Plug in values) If we plot these values, we have the following graph (See attached file) Please Like Tutor Sean on Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tutor-Sean/250732554967420). So to me, it looks like D is your answer.

myininaya (myininaya):

i disagree

myininaya (myininaya):

your second equation has a negative slope both equations have negative slopes

OpenStudy (oaktree):

I think C is the right answer. It's the only one with both slopes negative and a line that looks like it crosses y at 3.

myininaya (myininaya):

number 1 has both slopes negative too

myininaya (myininaya):

no a is right

myininaya (myininaya):

y=-2x+3 y=-x/2-2 < hass y-intercept -2

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Yeah, never mind. I forgot that the other also crosses at 3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually myininaya, this was put in maple after solving by hand and using a solver, and the graph is idential to D. D has a y-intercept of -2.

myininaya (myininaya):

d is wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain why? Because I can prove why I am right.

myininaya (myininaya):

both equations have negative slopes

myininaya (myininaya):

d shows the second line having a positive slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How is -2x-3 a positive slope?

myininaya (myininaya):

i said both equations have negative slopes

myininaya (myininaya):

2x+4y=-8 x+2y=-4 2y=-x-4 y=-x/2-2

myininaya (myininaya):

this is the equation it has y-intercept -2 and has negative slope

myininaya (myininaya):

y=-2x+3 has y-intercept 3 and has negative slope

myininaya (myininaya):

choice a fits this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I see...My bad on the sign of the first equation. Sorry bout that! :( Had a couple people this morning jump down my throat over similar problems and I was correct. Going to log off for time being to reflect. Thanks for the good debate!!! Choice A is correct. My y-intercept in this problem was wrong.

myininaya (myininaya):

sean i think you read the question wrong actually

myininaya (myininaya):

oops you noticed lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I read the question right, but did the algebra wrong in my head. Reworked on paper and found a misplaced - sign.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks for the help everyone :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for correcting me. I am far from perfect.

myininaya (myininaya):

well no one is perfect
