There is a free software Byki Express you can download to learn plenty of the basics and some advanced parts for over 60 languages (Japanese Included). It is software but it can be downloaded for free from byki.com (I used it to learn hungarian). It works on a Mac don't know about PC but give it a shot
There are a few interesting free resources on Android. This website is a good resource on culture in general < http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e621.html >, and here is the android market if you have an android device < https://market.android.com/search?q=japanese&so=1&c=apps >. Otherwise, try the DS < http://thejapanesepage.com/fun/nintendo_ds_study_japanese >, or resources on j-list < http://www.jlist.com/category/17422 >. I think interactive is the way to go. I've found it to be the most intuitive, plus with apps or games you can go over it as often as you need.
Jisho.org will help for vocabulary and word usage. http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/ can help you with grammatical basics and the basic writing systems, and there are Japanese podcasts available at http://www.japanesepod101.com/. If you don't mind using torrents, there are some very good extensive ones with Japanese learning resources.
I learned French oon Busuu.com its free and you can chat with people too! You don't have to download anything but if you want to become a member you can pay but other than that its free. I'm not a member.
