At a local produce stand sugar–coated strawberries sell for $3 per pound and chocolate covered bananas sell for $4 per pound. How many pounds of strawberries must be purchased to have a 5–pound mixture that costs $3.60 per pound?

OpenStudy (radar):

Let x = the number of pounds of strawberries needed. Then, 5- x would be the number of pounds of bananas needed. $3x + $4(5-x)=$3.60(5) $3x+$20.00 -$4x=$18.00 -$x=$18.00-$20.00=-$2.00 dividing thru by -$ x=2 or pounds of strawberries and then 3 pounds of bananas. Check 2@3.00 =$6.00 plus 3@4.00=12.00 5lbs@18.00 =$3.60
