Taxi fare is $2.00 plus $1.10 per mile. what would be the equation for that?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Equation is c = 1.1x + 2 where x is the number of miles driven and c is the total cost

thanks so much x)

hmmm

this is perhaps what the teacher/book wants, but if you have ever been in a cab you know that the meter does not go around continuously. it goes up in chunks. so your answer is actually a step function, not a continuous line

oh i see

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good point satellite so x is an integer (ie a whole number). So x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh should've thrown in that x is nonnegative (ie not negative)

thanks guys i got it :)
