The best way to write a thesis statement is to plan out the structure of your paper paragraph by paragraph and then decide what your overall main idea/argument is. Thesis= main idea.

What question does your paper address? Your thesis statement will be the answer to that question.
A simple example would be if your paper is about cigarette smoking. The question you are addressing is "what are the negative aspects of smoking on the body?"
Your thesis statement can be something like this... "Smoking cigarettes causes many health problems, such as asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, and even death."

Then, you would address those topics in the body of your paper.
