k+1=3k-1

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

k+1=3k-1 (subtract 1 from both sides) k+1-1 = 3k-1-1 k = 3k-2 (subtract 3k from both sides) k-3k = 3k-2-3k -2k = -2 (divide -2 by both sides) -2k/-2 = -2/-2 k = 1

How do you check your answer?

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

You take the original equation, k+1=3*k-1 and insert the value we found, k = 1. (1) + 1 = 3*(1) - 1, then solve, and if both side equal the same number, you have the correct answer. In this case, 2 = 3 - 1, which reduces to 2 = 2.
