OpenStudy (anonymous):

someone please help me;(

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

what do you need help with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

combining like terms

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

give an example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok 3k-7k^2+k+k+13k^2

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

you have 2 sets of 'like' terms, those raised to the 2 power and thus without an exponent

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

so you need to combine the 3k, +k, and the +k then combine -7k^2 and +13k^2

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

remember that the sign directly in front of the number or variable is attached to that number or variable

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

what do you get doing it this way?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5k+6k^2?

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

exactly, because 3K+k+k = 5k and 13k^2-7k^2 = 6k^2 notice both are positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so because both are positive its an addition sign? so if one was negative and one was positive it would be a subtraction sign?

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

yes

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

as you study a little more math, you will learn that positive and + are the same thing, likewise with negative and -

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i know that ..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so like also i need help on this... evaluate.. 3r^2 - 4r r=-1

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

can i help with anything else?

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

ok

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

3(-1)^2-4(-1) remember that a negative * negative = positive, so (-1)^2 is equal to (-1)*(-1)=1 so you have 3*(1) +4 = 3+4=7

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

likewise (-4)*(-1)=4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its like 3-(-4) which is equal to 7 also

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

yes, because 3-(-4)=3-1*(-4)=3+4=7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok if it says -p+2m and the m=-9 AND P=-10 then would you make the p positive or keep it negative?

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

-(p)+2(m) =-(-10)+2(-9) =10-18 =-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so when its like this -(-10) you make it positive

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

yes, -(-10) = -1*(-10) back to a negative * negative = positive there is an assumed 1 whenever you have a sign then (), so +(x) = +1*(+x) or -(x) = -1*(+x) =-x or -(-x) = -1*(-x) = x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks so much you helped me in ALOT ok and one more thinglets say i have 13-(-6) can i do keep the number change the - to posotive and change the -6 to positive to make it 13 + 6 to give me 19

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

you bet, and your welcome

OpenStudy (zrsmith):

have a good night, and enjoy your studies
