When you calculate a mean, the sign of the quotient always depends on the sign of the dividend. Why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the number of terms that you divide by is always positive since it is a counting number, the dividend can be negative if you are averaging numbers that are negative, for example the average of -3, -2 and -1 is (-3 + -2 + -1)/3 = -2 and so the dividend is negative and so is the quotient but note that 3 the divisor is positive and no matter how many numbers you add, the number of numbers (the divisor ) is positive.
